Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Big numbers made clear

Populations, distances and prices often reach the millions. Place value helps kids read and understand them.

  • The ×10 pattern

Seeing that each place is 10 times bigger prepares kids for multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 and for decimals.

  • Rounding and estimating

Rounding to any place helps kids estimate answers and check their work in every math topic.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Each place is 10 times bigger than the place to its right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands.

In 45,382 the 5 is in the thousands place, so its value is 5,000.

To compare, start at the left. 52,410 > 48,999 because 5 ten thousands beats 4.

To round 47,600 to the nearest thousand, look at the hundreds digit: 6 is 5 or more, so round up to 48,000.
