Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • The heart of fractions

Equivalent fractions are needed for comparing, adding, subtracting and simplifying fractions in grades 4 to 6.

  • Seeing the same amount

Kids learn that 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 are the same amount, which builds real fraction sense.

  • Everyday comparisons

Is 3/4 of a pizza more than 5/8? Comparing fractions helps in cooking, sharing and measuring.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent: they cover the same amount!

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number to get an equivalent fraction: 1/3 = 2/6.

To compare 2/3 and 3/4, make the bottoms the same: 8/12 and 9/12. So 3/4 is bigger.

Compare to 1/2 as a benchmark: 3/8 is less than 1/2, and 5/8 is more.

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Fold a paper strip in half, then in fourths, then in eighths. Color 1/2 and show your child that it covers the same space as 2/4 and 4/8.
