Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Independence

Telling time helps kids understand their day: when it's lunch, when the show starts and how long until bedtime.

  • Money sense

Knowing coin values is the first step toward saving, shopping and understanding that things cost money.

  • Counting by 5s and 10s

Counting nickels and dimes is real-world skip counting, which strengthens number skills.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

A clock has a short hand and a long hand. The short red hand shows the hour.

When the long blue hand points straight up to 12, it is something o'clock. This clock says 3 o'clock.

When the long hand points down to 6, it is half past. The short hand is between 4 and 5, so it is half past 4.

A penny is 1 cent. A nickel is 5 cents. A dime is 10 cents. The dime is small, but it is worth the most!

To count coins, start with the biggest: 10, then 15, then 16, 17. That is 17 cents!

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Ask your child to tell you when it's "half past" on the kitchen clock. Later, let them count a small pile of pennies, nickels and dimes to pay for a pretend shop item.
