Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Understanding, not guessing

Crossing out and hopping back show kids what subtraction means, so they don't just memorize answers.

  • Linked to addition

    Kids start to see that 7 - 3 = 4 because 3 + 4 = 7, a key idea for fact families later on.

  • Real-life problems

How many cookies are left? How many more do we need? Subtraction helps kids answer the questions they actually ask.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Subtracting means taking away. 5 birds sit on a tree. 2 fly away. Now 3 birds are left!

We write it like this: 5 − 2 = 3. The minus sign means take away.

You can also hop back on a number line. Start at 8 and hop back 3. You land on 5!

Take away 0 and nothing changes: 6 − 0 = 6. Take away all of them and 0 are left: 4 − 4 = 0.

Adding and subtracting are a team. 3 + 2 = 5, so 5 − 2 = 3.
