Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Strategies beat counting

Doubles and making ten let kids solve 8 + 7 in their heads, which is faster and more accurate than counting on fingers.

  • A grade 1 milestone

Adding and subtracting within 20 is one of the main goals of first grade math in most curricula.

  • Flexible thinkers

Choosing a strategy teaches kids that there's more than one way to solve a problem, a habit that helps in every subject.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Doubles are a number added to itself. 6 + 6 = 12. Doubles are easy to remember!

Near doubles: 6 + 7 is just one more than 6 + 6. So 6 + 7 = 13!

Make a ten to add fast. 9 + 4: move 1 over to make 10, then add the 3 that are left. 13!

On a number line, hop forward to add. Start at 9 and hop 4. You land on 13!

To subtract, think addition. For 15 − 7, ask: 7 plus what makes 15? The answer is 8!

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Roll two dice and add them. When you roll doubles, say them out loud together: "Double 6 is 12!" Then try one more than a double, like 6 + 7.
