What Your Child Will Learn

Race ice cubes in warm and cool places, freeze juice into ice pops, and find out which changes can be turned back.

  • Heat makes solids melt. The warmer the place, the faster the ice melts.
  • Cold makes liquids freeze into solids. It takes time to freeze all the way.
  • Melting and freezing can be undone. Cooking and burning can't.

Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Heat changes matter

Kids learn that heating and cooling can change solids into liquids and back.

  • Reversible changes

Some changes can be undone and some can't, an important idea in grade 2 science.

  • Kitchen science

Freezing and melting happen in every kitchen, making science part of daily life.

Inside Melting & Freezing

How the Course Works

Each level has a short read-aloud lesson, an interactive experiment and a mini quiz.

  1. Step 1 · Lesson

    Melting

When a solid gets warm enough, it melts into a liquid.

  2. Step 2 · Experiment

    Ice Cube Race

Three ice cubes, three places: a sunny window, a table and a cool box. Which one melts first?

  3. Step 3 · Lesson

    Freezing

When a liquid gets cold enough, it freezes into a solid.

  4. Step 4 · Experiment

    Ice Pop Maker

Let's put juice in the freezer and check how much of it is frozen after different times.

  5. Step 5 · Lesson

    Can We Change It Back?

Some changes can be undone. Melted ice can freeze into ice again.

  6. Step 6 · Experiment

    Undo or Not?

Some changes can go back and some can't. Let's test these changes!

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Melting

When a solid gets warm enough, it melts into a liquid.

Ice melts into water. Chocolate and butter melt too!

The warmer it is, the faster things melt.

Freezing

When a liquid gets cold enough, it freezes into a solid.

Water freezes into ice in the freezer.

Juice freezes into an ice pop!

Can We Change It Back?

Some changes can be undone. Melted ice can freeze into ice again.

Some changes can't be undone. You can't unbake a cake!

Cooking and burning make new stuff that can't turn back.

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Make juice ice pops together. Then race two ice cubes: one in the sun and one in the shade. Which melts first?

Ice Cube Race

  1. Put 3 ice cubes on 3 plates.
  2. Place one in the sun, one on a table and one in the fridge.
  3. Check every 10 minutes. Which is the first puddle?

Heat makes solids melt. The warmer the place, the faster the ice melts.

Ice Pop Maker

  1. Pour juice into small cups and add a stick.
  2. Put them in the freezer.
  3. Check one every 30 minutes. When is it a full ice pop?

Cold makes liquids freeze into solids. It takes time to freeze all the way.

Undo or Not?

  1. With a grown-up, melt a little chocolate in a warm bowl.
  2. Put it in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  3. Is it solid again? That change can be undone!

Melting and freezing can be undone. Cooking and burning can't.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this course for?

Melting & Freezing is a grade 2 science course for kids ages 7–8. That is Year 3 science in the UK and Year 2 in Australia. It also works well for review in the next grade, or as a challenge for a confident younger learner.

What will my child learn?

Race ice cubes in warm and cool places, freeze juice into ice pops, and find out which changes can be turned back. Along the way they practice: Heat makes solids melt. The warmer the place, the faster the ice melts; Cold makes liquids freeze into solids. It takes time to freeze all the way; Melting and freezing can be undone. Cooking and burning can't.

How long does the course take?

About 25 minutes in total, split into 3 short levels. Most kids finish it over two or three sessions. Progress is saved, so they can stop any time and pick up where they left off.

Is this course free?

Melting & Freezing is part of SkillBloom Premium, which unlocks every course in every subject. Each subject also has free courses, so your child can try SkillBloom before you decide.

Does my child need to read well to use it?

No. Every lesson has a friendly read-aloud voice, questions are read aloud too, and the pictures help kids follow along. Confident readers can turn the voice off.
