Three very different homes! Let's match each animal to its habitat.

  5. Step 5 · Lesson

    Keeping Warm in the Cold

Polar animals live where it is freezing cold.

  6. Step 6 · Experiment

    Blubber Glove

Let's put a hand in icy water with different coverings. How many seconds until it feels cold?

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Forest and Desert

A habitat is the home where a plant or animal lives. It has food, water and shelter.

A forest has lots of trees, rain and shade. Owls, deer and squirrels live there.

A desert is very dry and hot in the day. Cactuses store water inside.

Camels can go many days without drinking!

Ocean, Rainforest and Polar

The ocean is salty water. Sharks, whales and jellyfish live there.

A rainforest is hot and rainy. Parrots, monkeys and frogs live there.

Polar lands are icy and cold. Polar bears and penguins live there.

Keeping Warm in the Cold

Polar animals live where it is freezing cold.

Seals, whales and polar bears have a thick layer of fat called blubber.

Blubber works like a warm coat under their skin!

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Try the blubber test: coat one finger in shortening inside a plastic bag, then dip both fingers in ice water. Which feels warmer?

Who Lives Where?

  1. Pick an animal you like.
  2. Find out its habitat in a book.
  3. Draw the animal in its home with food, water and shelter.

Habitat Match

  1. Make a habitat in a shoebox with a grown-up.
  2. Use paper, leaves, cotton (snow) or blue paper (water).
  3. Add an animal that fits!

Every habitat is different, and its animals have bodies that fit it.

Blubber Glove

  1. Fill a bag with vegetable shortening (a grown-up helps).
  2. Put another bag inside it to make a glove.
  3. Dip it in icy water. Can you feel the cold?
