Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • The language of algebra

Variables and expressions are how math describes patterns and relationships, used in every later math class.

  • Exponents in science

Powers like 10⁶ appear in science for very big and very small numbers.

  • Clear, careful thinking

Evaluating expressions step by step builds precision and good math habits.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

An exponent tells how many times to multiply a number by itself: 2^3 = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.

Squared means power 2: 5^2 = 25. Cubed means power 3: 3^3 = 27.

Order of operations: parentheses, exponents, multiply and divide, then add and subtract.

To evaluate 3x + 4 when x = 5, swap in 5: 3 × 5 + 4 = 19.

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Write a rule like "cost = 3n + 2" for buying n notebooks with a $2 bag. Ask your child to find the cost for 4 and for 10 notebooks.
