Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • The heart of algebra

Solving equations is the central skill of algebra, and one-step equations are where it begins.

  • Problem solving

Writing an equation from a story teaches kids to turn real situations into math they can solve.

  • Balance thinking

Doing the same thing to both sides teaches the idea of balance and equality.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

An equation is like a balance: both sides are equal. x + 7 = 15 asks what number plus 7 is 15.

Undo with the opposite operation: subtract 7 from both sides, x = 8.

For 4x = 28, the opposite of multiplying by 4 is dividing by 4: x = 7.

Always check: put your answer back in. 4 × 7 = 28. Correct!

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Make a mystery number game: "I'm thinking of a number. Times 5 it makes 35." Your child writes the equation and solves it, then makes one for you.
