Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Formulas that make sense

Kids see why a triangle is half a parallelogram, so the area formula is easy to remember.

  • Real projects

Wrapping a present, painting a room or filling a planter all use surface area and volume.

  • Geometry for middle school

These skills prepare kids for the geometry and measurement in grades 7 and 8.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

The area of a parallelogram is base × height: 8 × 5 = 40.

A triangle is half of a parallelogram: area = base × height ÷ 2. 8 × 5 ÷ 2 = 20.

Surface area is the area of every face of a box added together. A cube with sides 2 has 6 faces of 4: 24.

Volume works with fractions too: 1/2 × 4 × 3 = 6.

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Wrap a box with paper and ask your child to calculate how much paper is needed (surface area) before cutting. Then find the box's volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this course for?

Area, Surface Area and Volume is a grade 6 math course for kids ages 11–12. That is Year 7 maths in the UK and Year 6 in Australia. It also works well for review in the next grade, or as a challenge for a confident younger learner.

What will my child learn?

Find the area of triangles and parallelograms, the volume of prisms with fraction edges, and the surface area of boxes. Along the way they practice: Parallelogram Area; Triangle Area; Surface Area; Volume with Fractions.

How long does the course take?

About 10 minutes in total, split into 4 short levels. Most kids finish it over two or three sessions. Progress is saved, so they can stop any time and pick up where they left off.

Is this course free?

Area, Surface Area and Volume is part of SkillBloom Premium, which unlocks every course in every subject. Each subject also has free courses, so your child can try SkillBloom before you decide.

Does my child need to read well to use it?

No. Every lesson has a friendly read-aloud voice, questions are read aloud too, and the pictures help kids follow along. Confident readers can turn the voice off.
