Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Free up brain power

When facts are automatic, kids can focus on understanding bigger problems instead of counting.

  • Fact families

    Seeing that 8 + 5, 5 + 8, 13 - 5 and 13 - 8 belong together cuts the number of facts to learn in half.

  • A grade 2 benchmark

Knowing sums to 20 from memory by the end of second grade is a common curriculum goal.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Doubles help you go fast: 8 + 8 = 16, so 8 + 9 is one more: 17!

Make a ten: for 9 + 6, give 1 to the 9 to make 10, then 10 + 5 = 15.

Fact families share three numbers: 7 + 5 = 12, 5 + 7 = 12, 12 − 5 = 7 and 12 − 7 = 5.

Even numbers can be split into two equal groups. 14 is even because 7 + 7 = 14!
