Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • A core grade 2 goal

Fluent addition within 100 is one of the main targets of second grade math and the base for adding bigger numbers.

  • Regrouping that makes sense

Kids learn why we carry a ten instead of just following steps, so the written method makes sense later.

  • Everyday math

Adding scores, ages, prices and pages read are all two-digit addition problems kids meet every day.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

To add two-digit numbers, add the tens and add the ones. 23 + 14: 2 tens + 1 ten is 3 tens, and 3 + 4 is 7 ones. That's 37!

Sometimes the ones make 10 or more. 27 + 15: 7 + 5 is 12 ones. Trade 10 ones for a new ten!

So 27 + 15 = 42. 2 tens + 1 ten + 1 new ten is 4 tens, and 2 ones are left.

You can also add three numbers. Look for a pair that makes 10 first: 6 + 4 + 8 = 18.
