What Your Child Will Learn

Sort mixtures from solutions, race sugar dissolving in hot and cold water, and pick the right method to separate each mixture.

  • In a solution, one substance dissolves completely. In other mixtures, you can see the parts.
  • Sugar dissolves fastest in hot water because the particles move faster.
  • Mixtures can be separated with magnets, filters and evaporation.

Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Chemistry basics

Mixtures and solutions are a core grade 5 topic and the start of chemistry.

  • Separating things

Filtering, evaporating and sieving are methods used in kitchens, factories and water treatment.

  • Everyday science

Lemonade, salad and sea water all become science examples.

Inside Mixtures & Solutions

How the Course Works

Each level has a short read-aloud lesson, an interactive experiment and a mini quiz.

  1. Step 1 · Lesson

    Mixture or Solution?

A mixture is two or more things mixed together. You can often still see each part.

  2. Step 2 · Experiment

    Mix Check

Let's stir these together. Will each make a mixture you can see, or a solution?

  3. Step 3 · Lesson

    Dissolving Race

Things dissolve faster in warm water.

  4. Step 4 · Experiment

    Sugar Cube Race

Let's drop sugar cubes into hot, room and cold water. Which one dissolves first?

  5. Step 5 · Lesson

    Separating Mixtures

We can separate mixtures using the properties of each part.

  6. Step 6 · Experiment

    Separation Station

Which method would you use to separate each mixture?

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Mixture or Solution?

A mixture is two or more things mixed together. You can often still see each part.

A solution is a special mixture where one thing dissolves completely in another.

Salt dissolves in water: you can't see it, but you can taste it!

Dissolving Race

Things dissolve faster in warm water.

Stirring and smaller pieces also speed up dissolving.

Warm water particles move faster and pull the sugar apart sooner.

Separating Mixtures

We can separate mixtures using the properties of each part.

A magnet pulls out iron. A filter catches solid bits. Evaporating leaves dissolved solids behind.

Sea salt is made by evaporating seawater!

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Mix sand and salt in water, then work together to separate them by filtering and leaving the water to evaporate.

Mix Check

  1. Stir a spoon of salt into one glass of water and sand into another.
  2. Wait 5 minutes.
  3. Which one looks clear? Which has stuff at the bottom?

In a solution, one substance dissolves completely. In other mixtures, you can see the parts.

Sugar Cube Race

  1. With a grown-up, put a sugar cube in hot and cold water.
  2. Don't stir! Time them.
  3. Try again, this time stirring. What changed?

Sugar dissolves fastest in hot water because the particles move faster.

Separation Station

  1. Pour muddy water through a coffee filter.
  2. Put salty water in a dish on a sunny window.
  3. After a few days, look for salt crystals!

Mixtures can be separated with magnets, filters and evaporation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this course for?

Mixtures & Solutions is a grade 5 science course for kids ages 10–11. That is Year 6 science in the UK and Year 5 in Australia. It also works well for review in the next grade, or as a challenge for a confident younger learner.

What will my child learn?

Sort mixtures from solutions, race sugar dissolving in hot and cold water, and pick the right method to separate each mixture. Along the way they practice: In a solution, one substance dissolves completely. In other mixtures, you can see the parts; Sugar dissolves fastest in hot water because the particles move faster; Mixtures can be separated with magnets, filters and evaporation.

How long does the course take?

About 25 minutes in total, split into 3 short levels. Most kids finish it over two or three sessions. Progress is saved, so they can stop any time and pick up where they left off.

Is this course free?

Mixtures & Solutions is part of SkillBloom Premium, which unlocks every course in every subject. Each subject also has free courses, so your child can try SkillBloom before you decide.

Does my child need to read well to use it?

No. Every lesson has a friendly read-aloud voice, questions are read aloud too, and the pictures help kids follow along. Confident readers can turn the voice off.

Can we use it for homeschool?
