What Your Child Will Learn

Sort renewable and non-renewable energy, turn a solar panel toward the sun, and test how wind speed changes a turbine's power.

  • Renewable energy, like sun and wind, won't run out. Coal, oil and gas will.
  • Solar panels make the most electricity when they face the sun directly.
  • Wind turbines turn the wind's moving energy into electricity. More wind makes more power.

Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Powering our lives

Kids learn where electricity comes from and how it reaches their homes.

  • Clean energy

Solar and wind power help kids understand choices about the planet's future.

  • Saving energy

Knowing energy is limited encourages habits like turning off lights.

Inside Energy Resources

How the Course Works

Each level has a short read-aloud lesson, an interactive experiment and a mini quiz.

  1. Step 1 · Lesson

    Renewable or Not?

We get energy from natural resources.

  2. Step 2 · Experiment

    Energy Sources

Let's sort energy sources. Which ones will last forever and which will run out?

  3. Step 3 · Lesson

    Solar Power

Solar panels turn sunlight straight into electricity.

  4. Step 4 · Experiment

    Panel Angle

Let's turn a solar panel and measure how much power it makes at each angle.

  5. Step 5 · Lesson

    Wind Power

Wind turbines have blades that the wind spins.

  6. Step 6 · Experiment

    Turbine Test

Let's put a model wind turbine in front of a fan at different speeds and measure its power.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Renewable or Not?

We get energy from natural resources.

Renewable resources won't run out, like sunlight, wind and flowing water.

Non-renewable resources, like coal, oil and gas, took millions of years to form and will run out.

Burning coal, oil and gas also pollutes the air.

Solar Power

Solar panels turn sunlight straight into electricity.

They make the most power when they face the sun directly.

Some panels even turn during the day to follow the sun!

Wind Power

Wind turbines have blades that the wind spins.

The spinning turns a generator, which makes electricity.

Stronger wind spins the blades faster and makes more power.

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Do an energy hunt at home: list everything that uses electricity. Talk about which ones you could switch off more often.

Energy Sources

  1. Find 5 things at home that use electricity.
  2. Turn off the ones you aren't using.
  3. Every bit saved helps resources last longer!

Renewable energy, like sun and wind, won't run out. Coal, oil and gas will.

Panel Angle

  1. Put two cups of water outside: one in direct sun, one tipped away.
  2. After an hour, feel which is warmer.
  3. Direct sunlight brings the most energy!

Solar panels make the most electricity when they face the sun directly.

Turbine Test

  1. Make a paper pinwheel with a pin and a pencil (a grown-up helps).
  2. Blow on it gently, then hard.
  3. Hold it in front of a fan on low and high.

Wind turbines turn the wind's moving energy into electricity. More wind makes more power.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this course for?

Energy Resources is a grade 4 science course for kids ages 9–10. That is Year 5 science in the UK and Year 4 in Australia. It also works well for review in the next grade, or as a challenge for a confident younger learner.

What will my child learn?

Sort renewable and non-renewable energy, turn a solar panel toward the sun, and test how wind speed changes a turbine's power. Along the way they practice: Renewable energy, like sun and wind, won't run out. Coal, oil and gas will; Solar panels make the most electricity when they face the sun directly; Wind turbines turn the wind's moving energy into electricity. More wind makes more power.

How long does the course take?

About 25 minutes in total, split into 3 short levels. Most kids finish it over two or three sessions. Progress is saved, so they can stop any time and pick up where they left off.

Is this course free?

Energy Resources is part of SkillBloom Premium, which unlocks every course in every subject. Each subject also has free courses, so your child can try SkillBloom before you decide.

Does my child need to read well to use it?

No. Every lesson has a friendly read-aloud voice, questions are read aloud too, and the pictures help kids follow along. Confident readers can turn the voice off.

Can we use it for homeschool?

Yes. SkillBloom is built for homeschooling families. Kids work through lessons, games and quizzes on their own, and the parent dashboard shows what they finished and which skills need more practice. It works on phones, tablets and laptops.
