What Your Child Will Learn

Sort inherited traits from learned ones, test how sunlight changes how plants grow, and follow the life cycle of a ladybug.

  • Inherited traits come from parents. Learned behaviors come from practice.
  • The environment can change traits. The same seeds grow differently in sun and shade.
  • A ladybug goes egg, larva, pupa, adult. That's complete metamorphosis.

Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • Why we look like family

Inherited traits explain why kids may share eye color or hair with parents.

  • Environment matters

Kids learn that surroundings also shape living things, like plants growing toward light.

  • Life cycles

Following a ladybug's life builds understanding of growth and change.

Inside Traits & Life Cycles

How the Course Works

Each level has a short read-aloud lesson, an interactive experiment and a mini quiz.

  1. Step 1 · Lesson

    Inherited or Learned?

Traits are features of a living thing, like eye color or height.

  2. Step 2 · Experiment

    Trait Sort

Some things we're born with and some we learn. Let's sort these traits!

  3. Step 3 · Lesson

    Environment Matters

Traits can also be changed by the environment: where a living thing lives.

  4. Step 4 · Experiment

    Sun or Shade

Two sunflowers with the same parents: one in the sun and one in the shade. Which one flowers first?

  5. Step 5 · Lesson

    A Ladybug's Life

Many insects go through complete metamorphosis: four very different stages.

  6. Step 6 · Experiment

    Ladybug Cycle

A ladybug changes a lot as it grows. Put its four life stages in order.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Inherited or Learned?

Traits are features of a living thing, like eye color or height.

Inherited traits are passed from parents to children, like curly hair or freckles.

Learned behaviors come from practice, like riding a bike or reading.

Environment Matters

Traits can also be changed by the environment: where a living thing lives.

A plant with lots of sun grows strong. A plant in shade grows slowly.

Flamingos are pink because of the food they eat!

A Ladybug's Life

Many insects go through complete metamorphosis: four very different stages.

A ladybug starts as a tiny yellow egg on a leaf.

The larva looks like a tiny spiky alligator and eats lots of aphids!

The pupa sticks to a leaf. Then an adult ladybug comes out.

For parents

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Make a family trait chart: eye color, hair color, can you roll your tongue? Talk about which traits are inherited and which are learned.

Trait Sort

  1. Look at family photos with a grown-up.
  2. Find traits that family members share.
  3. Make a list of things you learned to do this year.

Inherited traits come from parents. Learned behaviors come from practice.

Sun or Shade

  1. Plant two seeds from the same packet.
  2. Put one in a sunny place and one in a shady place.
  3. Compare their height every week.

The environment can change traits. The same seeds grow differently in sun and shade.

Ladybug Cycle

  1. Look for ladybugs on garden plants in spring.
  2. Can you also find a spiky larva?
  3. Draw each stage you find.

A ladybug goes egg, larva, pupa, adult. That's complete metamorphosis.
