VolumeGrade 5 Math for Kids

Count cubes and use V = l × w × h.

Volume teaches fifth graders that volume is the space inside a solid, measured in cubic units. Kids find the volume of boxes by counting cubes and with the formula length × width × height, connecting geometry with multiplication.

Why it matters

Why This Matters for Kids

  • 3D thinking

Volume moves kids from flat shapes to solid ones, building spatial reasoning.

  • Formulas with meaning

Kids see why length × width × height works by building with cubes, so the formula makes sense.

  • Packing and filling

How much fits in a box, a fish tank or a moving truck are real volume questions.

A Peek Inside the Lesson

This is the real lesson text your child hears, read aloud by a friendly voice.

Volume is how many unit cubes fill a box. We measure it in cubic units.

Volume = length × width × height. A box 4 by 3 by 2 holds 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 cubes.

You can also multiply the base area by the height: base 12, height 5, volume 60.

To find the volume of two boxes together, add their volumes.

Try It at Home

Learning sticks best when kids use it in real life. Here are simple ideas from this course.

Parent Tip

Measure a cereal box or shoebox with a ruler and calculate its volume. Then estimate how many sugar cubes or dice would fill it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this course for?

Volume is a grade 5 math course for kids ages 10–11. That is Year 6 maths in the UK and Year 5 in Australia. It also works well for review in the next grade, or as a challenge for a confident younger learner.

What will my child learn?

Volume is the space inside a solid, measured in cubic units. Find the volume of boxes with the formula length × width × height. Along the way they practice: Layers of Cubes; V = l × w × h; Missing Side; Volume Stories.

How long does the course take?

About 10 minutes in total, split into 4 short levels. Most kids finish it over two or three sessions. Progress is saved, so they can stop any time and pick up where they left off.

Is this course free?

Volume is part of SkillBloom Premium, which unlocks every course in every subject. Each subject also has free courses, so your child can try SkillBloom before you decide.

Does my child need to read well to use it?

No. Every lesson has a friendly read-aloud voice, questions are read aloud too, and the pictures help kids follow along. Confident readers can turn the voice off.

Can we use it for homeschool?

Yes. SkillBloom is built for homeschooling families. Kids work through lessons, games and quizzes on their own, and the parent dashboard shows what they finished and which skills need more practice. It works on phones, tablets and laptops.
